Kathak  Expectation vs Reality

Every one  before joining the dance form kathak gives a thought that kathak is totally based on dance done by Shiva The lord. But this question is still in search of whether this dance form is really connected to shiv tandav? Or do we need to know more about these?

Lets dig into the dance form kathak expectation vs reality.

Indian mythology also explains that kathak is somehow originated by the great lord Shiva and he has been always worshiped and known by the name “God of dance”.

There is a historical story behind this mystery with the “Origin of dance” it is said that whenever lord Shiva dances in euphoria, his one of the dearest disciples  Nandikeshwar used to observe him from very close.

Later the Nandikwshwar used to reverse and also try to replicate the dance performed  form by lord Shiva with the same laya and tal. It was then once by the request of lord Brahma, bharat muni played out the dramatization call “Tirupur Dah ” on kailash parvat in the presence of lord Shiva.

After watching Tirupur dah lord Shiva focused on introducing dance into the drama and also asked Nandikeshwar to introduce this dance form to Bharat Muni.

On the instruction of lord Shiva Nandikwshwar instructed all the dance forms along with lay tal Bharatmuni.

In this way only this famous dance of lord Shiva called as shiv tandav came into light of the fact that it was introduced by Tandu muni.

After viewing this tandav goddess Parvati got impressed and likewise composed a dance format in a very tender and feminine way which was named as Lasaya.

This tandav format of dance also portrays veer das, Raudra das, and krodh das in dance. Tandav dances are always more energetic, brisk and vigorous. Footwork is always quick and along with that body language is always full of charge.

In kathak pran is always danced and composed according to the Tandav style. Lasaya style of dance is always expressive and has various gat, thumri and kavit. It is also composed with style.

Tandav and lasaya are ways of dancing. Kathak isn’t just tandav yet but it is also connected with the narrating which includes both the Tandava and the Lasaya style.
